Tips for simple copywritingAlbert Einstein once said that if you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough – and that thought certainly applies today when it comes to your copywriting.  If you want customers and prospects to engage with your business then it’s important to provide relevant content that is easy to read and understand.

Simplifying your content doesn’t mean talking down to your audience, quite the contrary – it’s all about writing smart copy using a straightforward approach. It’s important that your copywriting is easy to understand. The last thing you want is for your targets to have to work hard and miss out on the key messages you want to convey. Check out these tips to make sure your copy engages your target audience every time.

5 Tips to Simplify your Business Copywriting

1.  Write for your Audience

Make sure you understand the audience you’re writing for and write in a way that is going to seem relevant and engaging to them. Set the tone and language that reflects your brand and use anecdotes and colloquial expressions to help make your copywriting sound more human!

2.  Use Succinct Sentences

Short sentences are better and easier to read than long sentences. Make it a rule to stick to 25 words max for each sentence.

3.  Make Paragraphs Short

Once you get your sentence length just right, it’s time to think about your paragraphs. Shorter paragraphs break up eye movement and give your brain time to think about what you’ve just read. 6 lines per paragraph are plenty.

4.  Use Examples

A great way to create engaging copy is to use examples and illustrations to emphasise your point. It’s another way to break up eye movement and add a new point of interest.

5.  Include Q&As

When writing copy it’s important to break up your points so that it is easily scannable for the reader so make good use of sub-headings and bullet points. Another effective way to help organise your readers’ thoughts is to ask questions and provide the answers.

Finally, remember to only write what is absolutely necessary. If you don’t need to say something then don’t!

QUICK TIP: If you’re really struggling to keep your copywriting succinct then get someone else to read it. Check with them whether your copy is appealing and if it makes them want to know more about your business, products and services.
